Police hostage situation?

my question is suppose their is a hostage situation. two cops are chasing a guy with a hostage. lets say they split up one of the cop find the guy and he shoots them in the chest. the next cop comes and sees the gun man getting away with the hostage does he help his partner or go after the gun man. Also he does not know if the gun shot wound is fatal or not. what would he do
